Guide to Biohort Bases

Quick Guide to Biohort Bases

If you are considering purchasing a Biohort Shed, Equipment Locker, or MiniGarage, it is important to choose the right foundation and base to protect the longevity of your building. This guide will provide you with our recommendations, points to consider, and comparisons to help you make the best decision to suit your needs.

The Aluminium Floor Frame provides the necessary stability for your building, acting as a sturdy anchoring point onto level surfaces.

Recommended for:

  • Level concrete bases
  • Point foundations
  • Paving or concrete slabs
  • Gravel (with ground anchors)

Important considerations:

  • Foundation alignment and size - The foundation must be level to ensure successful installation. If the shed is on a slope, functionality may be limited (for example, the doors cannot be adjusted correctly). There are foundation plans available for each building and size, available on request. These must be followed.
  • Vapour barrier - Ideally your foundation should incorporate a plastic membrane with a minimum thickness of 0.15 mm. This is to prevent moisture rising from the ground into the interior of the garden shed. The membrane must not be bigger than the surface area of the shed to ensure rainwater can drain into the surrounding area. It may be possible to retrofit a vapour barrier onto an existing foundation, however we would recommend the addition of the aluminium floor panels to cover this.
  • Sealing joint - The contact surface between the foundation and the aluminium floor frame should be sealed to prevent rainwater from entering the garden shed. A sealing compound suitable for metal and the outdoors must be used. To ensure optimum sealing, the sealing joint should be applied beneath the floor frame.

If your existing base is unable to meet these requirements, or you don't have one at all, individual base plans are available upon request, however it is worth noting that it can sometimes prove to be more expensive in labour and materials to construct a suitable base than to go for the SmartBase alternative.

Main advantages:

  • Cost effective solution for suitable existing bases
  • Relatively simple installation
  • Can be storm-safe with appropriate foundation
  • Allows for the addition of the aluminium floor panels

These elegant and modern Aluminium Floor Panels can be installed to create a functional floor in your Biohort shed. They help to provide a clean, finished look, and due to their high-quality, can support all your storage needs. The floor consists of 3 to 5 segments depending on the size of the shed, and it includes the necessary connecting rails. Please note, these can only be fitted alongside the Aluminium Floor Frame, and it is strongly recommended to place XPS hard foam boards with a thickness of approximately 2–3 cm under the entire Aluminium Floor Panel (not included).

 Main Advantages:

  • Cheaper metal flooring alternative to the SmartBase range

  • Simple to install

  • Helps to complete the look of your shed

  • Provides a stable and functional surface to make the most out of your space

The Biohort SmartBase is the ideal foundation for concrete or paved areas. It consists of high-quality aluminium floor boards, a special foundation frame, and height-adjustable feet. Slight ground irregularities of up to 4 cm can be compensated for, ideal for placing onto an existing base that may not be exactly level. The SmartBase is designed with a rainwater barrier, and in-built ground moisture protection, to ensure your building and everything in it stays dry.

Recommended for:

  • Concrete bases (even or uneven)
  • Paving or concrete slabs (even or uneven)
  • Solid surfaces
  • Foundations without a vapour barrier
  • Storing heavy-duty equipment

Main advantages:

  • Compensation of unevenness through adjustable feet
  • Easy to remove if necessary
  • Precisely fitted to all Biohort garden sheds, the Equipment Locker and the MiniGarage
  • Storm proof
  • Load bearing capaicty of 200kg/m2
  • In-built water protection and drainage

The SmartBase Plus is the perfect base for slopes and lawns. Unlike the SmartBase, the SmartBase Plus system utilises ground screws instead of adjustable feet. These are screwed directly into the ground and can compensate slopes of up to 15 cm. For this, the soil should be compact and free of large stones and roots.

Although it is the most expensive base option in the range, its value comes from its versatility and functionality. This base provides the best protection against water, provides a storm-proof hold, and requires very little ground work.

Recommended for:

  • Slopes
  • Lawns

Main advantages:

  • Little excavation
  • Gravel, concrete, or pavers not necessary
  • Compensation of unevenness through ground screws
  • Easy to remove if necessary
  • Precisely fitted to all Biohort tool sheds, the Equipment Locker and the MiniGarage
  • Storm proof
  • Load bearing capacity of 200kg/m2
  • Best protection against ground water and water ingress
